I'm a firm believer in digging into the community in which you live and, as my husband and I moved into the Crossroads this summer, I knew I wanted to find a way to give back to this vibrant area. Since photography is such a passion of mine, I thought that volunteering with photography at a school that is just getting off the ground and, literally being built with generous funding and volunteer time from those within the community, would be the perfect fit!
I had shot one of their open houses this summer, so it was great to be at the ribbon cutting event and see familiar faces of students and parents who have been anxiously awaiting the schools opening in September. It was so fun to capture the students anticipation as the ribbon was being cut and they were allowed to see their remodeled school for the first time. The picnic that followed with music, dancing and games for the kids helped capture the celebration of this historic event!
The Crossroads Academy has an amazing future with the best teachers and leadership in the area! With the Kansas City schools being in such disarray currently; Crossroads Academy is truly a beacon of hope and role model for what downtown Kansas City schools could become. It will be awesome to see how this school flourishes over the years!
I'm really looking forward to going back on September 4th to capture the first day of school! I'll be posting those pictures soon, so be sure to check back!
