Crossroads Academy Ribbon Cutting Event

It's not everyday you get to witness history in the making, but when you do; it's a surreal feeling.  That's how I felt recently when I had the opportunity to capture a momentous day for Kansas City's newest Charter school, Crossroads Academy, at their Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.

I'm a firm believer in digging into the community in which you live and, as my husband and I moved into the Crossroads this summer, I knew I wanted to find a way to give back to this vibrant area.  Since photography is such a passion of mine, I thought that volunteering with photography at a school that is just getting off the ground and, literally being built with generous funding and volunteer time from those within the community, would be the perfect fit!

I had shot one of their open houses this summer, so it was great to be at the ribbon cutting event and see familiar faces of students and parents who have been anxiously awaiting the schools opening in September.  It was so fun to capture the students anticipation as the ribbon was being cut and they were allowed to see their remodeled school for the first time.  The picnic that followed with music, dancing and games for the kids helped capture the celebration of this historic event!

The Crossroads Academy has an amazing future with the best teachers and leadership in the area!  With the Kansas City schools being in such disarray currently; Crossroads Academy is truly a beacon of hope and role model for what downtown Kansas City schools could become.  It will be awesome to see how this school flourishes over the years!

I'm really looking forward to going back on September 4th to capture the first day of school!   I'll be posting those pictures soon, so be sure to check back!

Super Sweet to Urban Chic- A Senior Session with Sarah!

Last Friday's senior pictures session with Sarah combined two of my favorite settings: a beautifully peaceful park and a character filled urban neighborhood.  We met early in the morning at Loose Park to avoid another hot day in Kansas City and wandered around snapping pictures as Sarah naturally fell into stunning poses. (Future model perhaps?!) It was fun to see her personality come out and her confidence in front of the camera.

After an afternoon break, we met up in the Crossroads District for a quick evening session as the sun set.  I always am inspired by the rustic textures, brick walls and other "found backgrounds" that lend to the urban atmosphere.  We even ventured to the Kauffman Center and Sarah's blue dress (which reminded me of a certain Kate!) highlighted her elegant frame and persona!  I had such a great time with Sarah- here are a few of her photos!

Thanks Sarah for such a great session!

Raindrops, Converse & George- A Morning with the Sperry's at Loose Park!

"Let's go for it" Stacey said an hour before our session last Friday.  It had been storming all morning and we were discussing our options for other sites or if we were going to have to decide on a rain date.  We were praying for a break in the clouds and it seemed we would have just enough time to squeeze in the family session at Loose Park.  With two energetic boys in tow, it was great to hear Stacey and Ryan were up for the adventure!

The time flew by as the boys dodged raindrops, huddled under the umbrella and even danced in the rain.  Tate's friend George made a special guest appearance and when Tate got tired of being in front of the camera, a juice box was just the thing to perk him up to finish out the shoot.  (Sometimes the talent just needs a break!)  While the boys had matching shoes, Stacey pulled out her converse for a matching shoe moment with Brock (he'll appreciate having such a cool mom when he gets older)!  Here's just a sneak peek of some of the fun moments!

Thanks Sperry's for another great session!
